Features of the maintenance and care of the English Cocker Spaniel

Caring for an English Cocker Spaniel requires some effort; the dog should be bathed, sheared and trimmed regularly. The maintenance of the English Cocker Spaniel requires careful and regular care, especially for wool. Owners will need a variety of combs and brushes, scissors and a trimmer.

Timely combing of wool will help to avoid tangling. Although cocker spaniels do not fade much, combing will save you from excess hair in the apartment. Usually it is enough to comb the pet 2-3 times a week, but during the molting period it is necessary to do this daily. Mowing an English Cocker Spaniel is an important part of grooming, to which it should be accustomed from childhood. Wool treatments are common to this breed. The dog will behave calmly in the process of cutting, if it is accustomed from childhood.

The dog enjoys frequent bath moves. You can bathe every week using shampoo for long-haired dogs. After bathing, it is very important to dry the dog with a hairdryer, otherwise it may catch a cold in a draft. But only drying with a hairdryer is allowed in the cool mode, since hot air is harmful to their skin. Be sure to pay attention to ear care, if they are not looked after they will smell unpleasant. It is necessary to carefully and deeply clean the ear canals with a cotton swab.

The English Cocker Spaniel is prone to obesity, so keep an eye on the amount of food consumed and don’t succumb to the provocation of compassionate eyes in an empty bowl, after a portion you just eaten. The diet should include: raw meat (beef and boneless chicken), boiled offal (liver, heart, lungs), sea fish, vegetables, fruits, dairy and sour-milk products (milk, cottage cheese, cheese, sour cream), cereals (oatmeal, millet , rice, buckwheat), soups.

You can alternate natural food with special dog foods. The pet should always have free access to fresh water. It is enough to feed an adult dog once a day. Food should be at room temperature and free of salt. Unfinished food and leftover food should not be left in the bowl.

The English Cocker Spaniel can be ill with both acquired and hereditary diseases. They rarely get sick, because they are naturally active and healthy dogs. Cocker spaniels have psychological ailments (hysteria, panic, aggression), diseases of the organs of vision (cataracts, glaucoma and others) and skin diseases (susceptibility to various fungal infections). When walking, be sure to wear a flea-collar collar.

But the most vulnerable part of a dog’s body is its ears. They often develop infection and inflammation, otitis media may appear. Inspect your ears regularly, especially if the dog shakes its head and scratches its ears. If redness or odor is detected, take the dog to the veterinarian immediately. Owners should regularly inspect and clean their ear canals.

To exclude the occurrence of health problems, you should regularly visit a veterinarian, monitor the proper care and nutrition. The basis of a dog’s health, alertness and activity is a balanced diet. It is imperative to often take walks in the fresh air. But just walking is not enough, the dog additionally needs loads in the form of exercises and games.
